Whether you’re building a watch collection from scratch or starting to add pieces to your current collection, it’s important to know the basics. The four watches below are a great place to start.

Dress Watch

Quality Watch Necessities  is the classic watch style, combining timeless design with modern practicality. Its case may be circular or rectangular, and it typically features a leather band. The dial can feature simple hour indexes, Roman numerals, or small Arabic numerals. Usually, the dial also displays a date and moon display. Some dress watches may include a chronograph, which is a separate time system that functions like a stopwatch. This is typically paired with a tachymeter, a scale inscribed around the rim of the watch that can be used to calculate speed or distance traveled.

A field watch is a rugged tool watch designed for use in harsh, outdoor conditions. A field watch’s face is typically made from durable materials such as stainless steel or titanium, and it often includes a tachymeter for measuring speed or distance. Generally, the case is waterproof to at least 50 meters and the dial is protected with sapphire or hardened mineral glass. Typically, field watches have few to no complications.

As with any accessory, personal comfort is paramount when it comes to wearing a watch. However, as a general rule of thumb, it’s best to wear a watch on your non-dominant wrist. For right-handed individuals, this means wearing the watch on your left wrist.
