As AI techniques evolve from rule-based models to complex generative architectures, they are becoming more than just tools for automating certain aspects of game design. The first examples of game AI date back to 1941 with the computerized version of Nim and later, the computerized checkers program by Christopher Strachey and Dietrich Prinz for chess. These early algorithms were able to beat human opponents.

Since the golden age of arcade games, game AI has evolved from simple rule-based systems to more complex finite state machine (FSM)-based NPCs. These FSMs model the behaviors of NPCs by breaking them down into distinct states and transitioning between these states based on various triggers or conditions. Space Invaders (1978) used these AI patterns to create recognizable enemy movements while Galaxian and Pac-Man added more diverse and unpredictable movement behavior.

The next big breakthrough in gaming AI could come from a small independent studio rather than a large publisher, as these larger companies are often reluctant to take risks and lack the talent needed for cutting edge developments in AI. These developers will use generative AI to enhance character interactions and storytelling with immersive experiences that would not be possible without this technology. NPCs will dynamically respond to player actions, adjusting gameplay and dialog on the fly. Their relationships with players will develop and expand over time, leading to more convincing multidimensional characters rather than robotic quest dispensers.
